No, This Photo Does Not Show Amritpal Singh Disguised As A Woman | BOOM

 

A morphed photograph of pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh is circulating on social media with false claims that it shows the Waris Punjab De (WPD) chief disguising himself as a woman to flee from Punjab after the police launched a manhunt in search of him.

Punjab Police on Tuesday released a set of seven images of Amritpal Singh urging the general public to help them in their search stating that these are the different guises used by the Khalistan leader who has been at large for five days in a row. In the set of seven images, Singh can be seen sporting various turbans, beard and a clean shaven look.

BOOM found that the morphed photo of Singh, where he resembles a woman, is created through the application of a software on one of the clean shaven images of Singh released by Punjab Police.

The photo along with the other pictures of Singh is being shared with a Hindi caption that translates to, "As per the latest CCTV footage, fugitive Amritpal Singh has changed his attire from 'Nihang' to 'normal boy' wearing pants, shirt and fled on bike. If seen somewhere, immediately inform your nearest police station."

Singh was last spotted on a CCTV footage, fleeing on a motorcycle. The vehicle has since been recovered near a canal in Jalandhar.

Fact Check

On Tuesday, Punjab Police released a set of photos of possible looks that Amritpal Singh might adopt to evade capture. This included photos showing him sporting a turban and a beard and images of him with cropped hair and without a turban. The set of images also included a doctored photo of him with a clean shaven look.

BOOM was able to ascertain that the same photograph was modified and created to make Singh resemble a woman in the viral photograph. ANI's tweets can be seen below.

Further, we also found a Facebook post carrying the viral photograph with a watermark of FaceApp, a photo and video editing application.

We then ran a reverse image search on the photograph and found a tweet by right wing Twitter handle Kreately who tweeted the same photograph on March 21. Kreately started the tweet as a joke, mischievously cropped the watermark of FaceApp with the image and captioned it as, "Guess who".

We then used the photo of Amritpal Singh released by Punjab Police, where he can be seen in beard and clicking a mirror selfie with his earphones on and ran it through the FaceApp.

Using FaceApp, we were able to remove the beard from Singh's face and include long hair to the photo similar to the viral picture. The changes can be seen below.

'Illegal Dargah' in Mumbai's Mahim Demolished Day After Raj Thackeray Shows Video in Rally

 

An illegal dargah in Mumbai’s Mahim was demolished on Thursday, a day after Raj Thackeray showed a video of the construction during his rally in Shivaji Park. Acting upon the video, city collector constituted a six-member team to inspect the spot and remove the encroachment.

Sources told News18 that it took two hours for the demolition to be completed. Some BMC and police officials also arrived at the bay site. The structure has been there for nearly two-and-a-half years, and people around are not calling it a ‘dargah’, sources added.

Mahim dargah trustee Suhail Khandwani said that at a distance of 100 meters from Mahim dargah, there is a “6×5 structure" on top of the water, which is about 600 years old.

“Makhdoom Shah used to get his education there. This place, which is called Chilla, is also registered in Waqf in 2007," Khandwani added. He further said, “There is no dargah nor there is any intention to make it like Haji Ali Dargah, it is a historical and respectable place."

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief, in his Gudi Padwa address, on Wednesday played a clip and claimed that an ‘illegal dargah’ has come up off the Mahim coast in Mumbai.

“Whose dargah it is? Is it of a fish? It was not there a couple of years ago. “If the illegal construction is not demolished immediately, then we would construct a huge Ganpati temple at the same place," Raj Thackeray warned.

Later sharing the video on Twitter, MNS said that a ‘new Haji Ali’ is being prepared in the middle of the sea in broad daylight and yet the police and the municipality did not see it.

The video shows an island-like tiny piece of land near the coast with a few poles. It also showed a couple of people visiting the stretch, wading through the sea water and offering their respect. Raj Thackeray claimed that it was a ‘dargah’.

“I want to ask the Constitution-abiding Muslims of the country: Do you condone this? I don’t want to flex, but when needed I will have to do it,” Raj Thackeray said, adding that the ‘illegal dargah’ is near the dargah of Makhdum Baba in Mahim.

Other BJP leaders also welcomed the move. Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule said that deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis acted soon after Raj Thackeray brought the issue to notice.

Shiv Sena claimed that land mafia has been active in Maharashtra for the last five years. A minister was also involved in this serious scam in the state. Illegal deals have also been made, the party alleged.

Raj Thackeray also said he will renew his campaign to pull down loudspeakers from mosques if the states government does not take any action in the matter.

The MNS chief demanded withdrawal of nearly 17,000 cases slapped on his party workers last year when they launched protests seeking removal of loudspeakers from mosques.
